A. Academic Qualifications
Applicants must hold one of the following:
- An Israeli Matriculation Certificate (Bagrut), or
- An equivalent qualification, such as:
- A recognized pre-academic preparatory program approved by the Council for Higher Education
- A foreign high school diploma recognized by the Ministry of Education
- A “30+ Preparatory Program” certificate
B. Instrumental Audition
1. Personal Interview
Applicants are required to prepare three pieces. The pieces must be:
- Memorized (performed by heart)
- Thoroughly understood in terms of structure
- Demonstrate improvisational ability
Applicants may perform the pieces at a tempo of their choice.
The examining committee will select two out of the three pieces for performance.
Applicants must perform unaccompanied (no ensemble).
Special Requirements for Drummers:
- Drummers must know the melody and structure of all three pieces by heart
- Applicants will be required to perform:
- The melody on the drum set in 4×4 and 8×8 formats
- A solo over the form while maintaining ensemble feel
- Basic familiarity with additional styles (e.g., rock and Latin) is required
Audition Repertoire
Applicants must prepare the following pieces:
- Now’s the Time – Charlie Parker
- Prince Albert – Kenny Dorham
- In a Sentimental Mood – Duke Ellington
In addition, applicants must prepare a list of at least five jazz pieces with which they are familiar.
This list must be submitted to the examining committee on the day of the audition.
The committee may request the performance of one piece from this list.
C. Written Examination
Music Theory:
- Intervals – identification and construction
- Triads and seventh chords in root position – identification and construction
- Inversions of triads and seventh chords
- Scales and modes – identification and construction
- Transposition
- Reading and writing in treble and bass clefs
- Analysis
- Harmonic and/or melodic analysis of a jazz piece
Ear Training:
- Melodic dictation (single-line melody)
- Jazz harmonic progression dictation
- Rhythmic dictation
